On April 18, we will head to Kaub on the Rhine for painting.
The small town of Kaub lies picturesquely between the banks of the Rhine and the steep slopes of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, carved by the river over time. It offers a stunning view of Pfalzgrafenstein Castle. Pfalzgrafenstein is a unique toll castle situated on an island in the Rhine. It was built in the 14th century and served to collect tolls from passing ships – today it is a striking landmark of the Middle Rhine Valley.
As alternative painting motifs, Kaub offers not only views of the Rhine and the opposite side (Bacharach), but also several interesting buildings, as well as a Blücher statue. The latter commemorates the Prussian General Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, who crossed the Rhine with his troops near Kaub in 1814 – a decisive moment in the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon.
We meet at 12:30 PM in Kaub and paint the Pfalzgrafenstein.
Afterwards, around 2:00 PM, we will head to a café for a relaxed get-together (possibly the atelier café of Kirsten Herold? I will confirm this) or alternatively to a bistro or beer garden in Kaub.
Those who wish can take the small passenger ferry to Pfalzgrafenstein at 3:00 PM and explore the toll castle on its island. The ferry runs every 30 minutes.
The castle admission plus ferry costs €8. The last ferry to the island departs at 5:00 PM; you must return by then at the latest. This still leaves enough time to paint a second picture outdoors on the island.
There are no dining facilities or restrooms on the castle island.
Arrival is possible either via the B42 from the Mainz/Wiesbaden side, or by crossing the Rhine via ferry from the opposite bank (St. Goar or Bacharach) and continuing via the B9.
We meet at 12:30 PM at the paid parking lot by the ferry in Kaub:
